Why We Bought Land and Built an Olive Grove in Bale: The Kristofola Story

The Prgomet family’s love for the olive tree has been passed down through generations. However, it was just over twenty years ago that this deep affection transformed into a clear mission: to produce premium extra virgin olive oil. Today, on ten hectares of land near the picturesque Istrian town of Bale, more than 2,500 carefully cultivated olive trees stand as the foundation of the Kristofola brand.

Bale – an Istrian jewel for olive growing

The decision to buy land in Bale was no accidental. This charming town in southwestern Istria proved to be the ideal location thanks to its unique microclimate, perfectly suited for olive cultivation. Although located on the 45th parallel – the very edge of the globally recognized olive-growing belt – olive trees have thrived here for centuries. This is evidenced by numerous ancient trees of local varieties that still grace the region.

From the beginning, we believed in the importance of expert cooperation. Since our company’s founding, we have worked in close partnership with agronomist Elvino Šestić from Bale, who guides us through agrotechnical processes and helps us achieve the highest standards of quality in olive growing.

Despite severe frosts recorded in 1929 and 1956, olive trees in Bale endured – further proof of their resilience and the strength of this land. Motivated by both historical significance and our desire to produce exceptional olive oil, we purchased a plot known as Kristofola and began cultivating our own olive grove 25 years ago.

Returning to tradition – with modern steps

Today, our ten-hectare olive grove is home to more than 2,500 trees. The leading variety is the native Istrian buža. Following expert recommendations, we also planted the Tuscan pendolino, an excellent pollinator that enhances the stability and fertility of the grove. After harvesting, our olives are processed in the most modern Grubić olive mill, which is also located in Bale.

Purchasing land in Bale was far more than a business decision – it was the realization of a vision, a commitment to our passion for olives. We are proud that our journey began here, and that today, each drop of our high-quality, internationally award-winning olive oil carries with it the spirit of this land, the expertise of those who cultivate it, and the dedication of the family behind it.
